Lead singer trial (Me)

As we were ready to start filming out project, we received bad news from one of our group members and decided to leave sixth form, the problem  that we faced was he was going to be our lead singer and we had to find a new lead singer as soon as possible because we needed to start filming and we were running out of time. So, we decided that I would do a trial lip synching our song of choice and if we were successful I would take on the lead singer role.

First day of filming

On our first day of filming we decided to film the simple parts of our music video because some of our main characters where busy in lessons. We decided to film clips of cars driving away as we are going to use the clips in our clips. We took a few videos of a variety f cars to decide which clip we were going to use and which was the most suitable for our music video.

Date: 28th November 12
Major Issues:

Filming at:

We would be filming at Robert clack music studio as our stage for the band
Another place we would be filming at is at Michael Matute house for the scene with the argument with the guy and his female.  A further location would be a café. This will be the scene when the guy sees his girl friend with another male.

Solutions:

There are particular things in which my group and I should take when going out to film. If we were going to film at the side of the road, a solution would be that we should not film on the road. Before using the café and filming, we would need to have permission.  We also need to make sure that the area is safe if it wasn’t we would make sure that we have contact to parents and on site services.

Production:

Potential problems and how to overcome these problems:

There are a few problems we could face during the filming process of our music video, and explaining how we can overcome these issues. here are some of the problems we cold face:

  • The room- The room we are planing on using to film is a also used for lessons, so we will be given set times to use this room as it may be needed for other things, so we need to make sure we film in time as the room is used on a schedule process.
  • We need to film our music video to a high standard however as soon as possible because if one of our team members become ill we may have to begin filming again using a new character for the position they previously had.
  • If we are filming outside scenes we need to make sure that we can try and get the same scenario each time, so if we film one day and it is sunny, we nee to make sure we film again on a day were it is sunny rather than raining as it may not look like the music video was filmed in the same day.

Silent Sundays (Don't exist anymore)

Myspace Page:

As I was waiting for a reply from Silent Sundays to use their track I foudn out from their myspace page that they do not exist anymore and they are no more. This was why they had not replied as it had been 1 week, so as they do not exist anymore I assumed that it is still ok for us to use their music for our project.

Audience Research- Vox Pops

Like all good media our Vox Pops will be staged in a classroom.
The questions that would be asked are:

  • Do you watch music Videos?
  • What is your favourite music video?
  • What do you like about music videos?
  • what makes a great music video?
  • whee do you watch music videos?
Below shows some pictures taken during the editing process of our video:

Asking for permission to use music from chosen artist

We are A-Level students at Robert Clack School in East London, and we would like to request permission to use you music. The track we wish to use is silent serenade. We would very much appreciate if you would give us the permission to do so as it is for our media project to create a music video from an artist and genre of your choice.
Thank you.

Chosen artists- Silent Sundays

AboutThe artist chosen is made up of Dave O'Leary - Vocals/Rhythm Guitar
Tom Harris - Lead Guitar/ Backing Vocals
Chris Tracey - Bass Guitar
Lee Dainty - Drums & Percussion

The band formed in mid 2006 after trying many different line-ups until we found a comfortable line-up and an always positive atmosphere.
We are a 4-Piece band, and have a wide variety in the styles of music that we play. We play a mixture of covers and originals which range between punk, rock and indie. With a Lead guitarist and Drummer into some of the more heavier genres, our music includes fast solos, fast rhythms, Strong and rhythmic drumming and some awesome fills. Also on the lighter side, the band has a bassist and rhythm guitarist into lighter, more indie style music, giving songs a nice melodic feeling with some chords new to the guitaring world, fast chord changes, funky bass riffs and clever chord structures. With Dave as our lead vocalist and Tray and Tom as back-up vocalists, our vocal range is almost endless, so we like to include clever and melodic vocal parts, with some strong vocal parts for all 3 of the vocalists. (http://www.unsigned.com/silentsundays)

Peter Gabriel: Sledgehammer

This was another music video that involved a huge amount of animation. The video took a long time to create because it involved a huge amount if mise en scene which meant a lot of editing was needed.

Chosen Song lyrics- Unfinished

Verse 1;
Every time that you're in reach
i slip up, and you slip away from me
theres a lesson here to teach
seem like you've always got something to say

Chorus;
with all i've that lied to me
count me from reality
won't you just let go cause i cant breathe
im __________________,
'cause in my eyes its just too late
won't you just let go cause i cant breathe

Verse 2;
seems like we've been living lies
morning dreams just come and pass me by
wipe the mud from out my eyes
were still living in a compromise
so just stop complaining
i dont need to say
everything still changing coz you __________
you can do much better, and i can't do much worse
this lie isn't bad, this is my first

Audience research- Survey Monkey

Audience research is important in order to select the correct music video for yourself. The website I used to produce my audience research was survey monkey. This websites produces questionnaires and through this you are able to find out the age of the people that will watch your music video, and how they will choose to watch it. Audience research could also help you when you are trying to get the most views out of people. Below shows an image of the questionnaire showing my audience research.

Purpose of a music video

What are the main purpose of a music video

  • To promote the song
  • Portrays an image of the artist, and example of this is Christina Aguilera with the song dirty which is a contrast of her career as she started off as a child in disneys mickey mouse club.

Success Criteria

How might we measure the success of a music promo video?

  • Sales of word of mouth
  • views on youtube
  • Newspaper articles
  • Tv reports
  • How many times it has been shown on TV
  • Publicity (Rebecca Black Friday)
  • Downloads (illegal, legal)
  • Chart success
  • Trending topic on social networking sites (Twitter, Facebook)
  • Video music awards
  • Most viewing of music videos now appears online

Preliminary task

The Preliminary tasks involved lip syncing to a song of choice. We had to choose a suitable location to carry out the task and the song that we chose to lip sync was don't go breaking my heart by Elton John. Below is a video of the song.

Copyright- Informatin

Copyright is a legal concept in which the person with original work has the rights to it. Generally, it is "the right to copy", but also gives the copyright holder the right to be credited for the work, to determine who may adapt the work to other forms, who may perform the work, who may financially benefit from it, and other related rights.

Jamie Thraves- Case Study

Director - Jamie Thraves
Jamie made short films at university and was recognised due to his successful short films that he made. He used award-winning short films as a 'calling card' to get a foot in the door with video production company factory films. Jamie began by shooting three low budget music videos costing about £5,000 to make each to make. He had to show his films to a lot of editors in order for him to get hired, he had a process of how the music video works which was:

  • A 'commissioner' from a record label sends a track 5-10 would do a plan/ story bored
  • This stage of planning is unpaid
  • The director who is chosen for the best concept is then contacted to make the video
  • Only then is the director is then paid
As can be seen for many directors in the business, it is a precious existence where their livelihood is dependant on each commission
Both of the videos that Jamie Thraves decided to send off to the producers had been a success and were accepted by producers, these two videos were:
1. Radiohead - Just
  • This music video budget was £100,000
  • It was shot in 3 days

2. Coldplay- The scientist

  • The line that inspired the concept was 'lets go back to the start'
  • The budget of the film was £200,000
  • And it was shot in 3 days

Jamie Thraves- Continuation

Jamie's lates music video was for Japanese popstars-song for lisa
Jamie's videos can cost up to £20,000 and the maximum shooting time is only 3 days.

Jamie has used the music videos as his way to get into the film business. He produced shot films in his music videos.

Jamie Thraves' Top tip

  • Use the lyrics but try not to be to literal (don't put a picture of every line in there)
  • Most importantly - go with the emotion of the lyrics (if the song is about heartbreak and you could hear that the song is aggressive you wouldn't have a scene where it is all cute and "lovey-dovey"

The music institution

The music industry, or institution is made up of many different record labels. Record labels are a trademark brand who are highly associated with the advertising and distribution or the recording of music and the leasing of it via music videos or legal websites such as iTunes. Most record labels are usually companies that are trademarks, so other people cannot use their logo, products, company color etc otherwise they are eligible to sue. This is why if I was to use a well known artist music for my music video I would have to ask the artists record label for permission to use their product other wise they have the right to sue me. Well known and major record labels include:

  • EMI

  • EMI eventually changed to Universal music group
  • Sony music

  • Warner music group

Music to select- Unsignedt.com and Newsgrounds.com

To decide where I can select my music to use for my music video I was recommended two websites, unsigned.com and newsgrounds.com. Both websites have hundreds of songs from a variety if genres including hip-hop, rnb, indie etc. Using artists who are not signed to any major music label's music is better for us as we are not violating copyrighted songs as they are independent artist not under any contract to anyone. Below is an image of both sites.

Analysing an album cover: Dreams and Nightmares

An album cover can show us what kind of music we can exact and way type of lyrics we cane expect to here from the album. The album that I am going to be analysing is dreams and nightmares by Meek Mill, The album cover shows us a gold watch chain linked to a handcuff, the Gold watch showing the dream, and handcuff showing the nightmare. There is a two varieties of fonts used on the front cover of the album which are very effective, the plain normal type font is used for the 'dreams' title of the album, and a creepy and bloody font used for the nightmares part of the album.

Queen: Bohemian Rhapsody

This music video was created at the start of the music video era. During the period of when the video was released it was the top of the pops era and because Queen was number 1 on top of the pops for a number of week all four members of the group were included in the video and because it was a  very creative video full of effects people were amazed by this and it became very popular because of this. This also amazed people because it was the first time it was done.
